The Central Plateau is a unique area of high visual amenity and natural beauty, home to Tongariro National Park, and has dual UNESCO World Heritage status. This status recognises the park's important Maori cultural and spiritual associations as well as its outstanding volcanic features.
We came to the area drawn by these qualities and are committed to their continuing preservation. With this in mind, Station Lodge is devoted to preserving this natural beauty, and will adopt minimal impact practices, to be energy efficient, operate using the best practice and contribute to the broader local sustainability of the area.
ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY: Station Lodge is learning to improve our Carbon Footprint (your carbon footprint is the sum of all emissions of CO2 [carbon dioxide], which are induced by your activities in a given time frame), by mainly reducing the consumption of water and electricity.
Standard operating procedures to minimise waste and conserve energy at Station Lodge - YHA Ohakune include the following procedures.
We save energy by:
We buy local produce where possible to reduce transport emissions.
We use sun light when possible to dry our linen to reduce energy
Low energy light bulbs are installed in 95% of our premises.
Energy efficient timers are installed on exterior lighting /monitor sensor equipment.
We offer our guests free bicycles for local touring, there are free maps of the area showing the excellent walking tracks to town and back again. We encourage guests to car pool up the mountain road when possible.
We reduce our waste by:
Giving you the opportunity to recycle your rubbish & food scraps. Our chickens are fed leftover food scraps. The remaining scraps are then given to our worm farm. Further leftover scraps are placed in our compost pile. The broken down material is then placed in our garden. We are determined!
Reducing the amount of waste going to landfill by separating it for recycling.
Reducing packaging to a minimum by not using single packaged portions, using dispensers for high- quality toiletries, buying quality products in bulk, replacing disposable items with reusable ones.
We have installed shower heads that reduce water.
Using only water efficient washing machines and dishwashers.
We have dual flushing toilets.
Using only biodegradable or non toxic cleaning products where possible.
We plant trees and shrubs that the native birds love to come feed from.
We have used recycled or reusable furniture where possible.
We use recycled timber from the property to build our bunk beds, safety rails and lounge furniture.
We don’t use paper towels in the bathrooms, instead we use reusable hand towels and bath mats.
